Water Filtration Systems in San Diego
Whole-House & Point-of-Use Filtration Installed by Licensed Residential Plumbers
San Diego tap water is very hard and treated with chloramine, a disinfectant that standard pitcher filters can’t remove. Ability Plumbing Service and Repair is a family-owned residential plumbing company serving San Diego County since 2013, and our licensed team installs water filtration systems as part of a full residential plumbing practice. The same plumbers handling your water heater, pipe repair, and sewer lines are the ones sizing and installing your filtration system. That matters: a plumber who already understands your home’s pipe configuration and water pressure can match a system to your existing plumbing rather than guessing.
Our team brings over 25 years of combined plumbing experience to every project. We hold an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau and are members of the Plumbing-Heating-Cooling Contractors Association (PHCC), reflecting our commitment to industry standards across every service we offer.

San Diego Water Quality & Why Filtration Matters
According to the City of San Diego Public Utilities Department, San Diego’s tap water ranges from 16 to 18 grains per gallon depending on your area, putting it firmly in the “very hard” category. Hardness isn’t the only issue, though. The city uses chloramine, a compound of chlorine and ammonia, as its primary disinfectant rather than free chlorine. Chloramine is more stable across a large distribution system, but it’s also harder to remove at the tap.
Standard activated carbon pitcher filters and basic faucet attachments are designed for free chlorine. They don’t effectively remove chloramine. Addressing it requires either catalytic carbon filtration or a reverse osmosis system, both of which are installed solutions rather than countertop workarounds. San Diego tap water meets current federal and California safety standards. The reason homeowners pursue filtration isn’t safety compliance. It’s the gap between what’s legally acceptable and what they want from their drinking and cooking water. The City of San Diego publishes an annual Drinking Water Quality Report through its Public Utilities department that details current treatment levels and detected contaminants for anyone who wants to review the specifics.
Water Filtration System Types We Install
Not every home has the same water quality concerns, and not every filtration approach is the right fit. We install two main categories of systems for San Diego residential homeowners: whole-house filtration and under-sink reverse osmosis point-of-use systems.
Whole-House Water Filtration
A whole-house system installs at the point where water enters the home, so every tap, shower, and appliance receives filtered water. Whole-house carbon filtration can reduce chloramine along with the taste and odor issues that come with it. It doesn’t remove dissolved minerals, which is a separate concern addressed by water softening rather than filtration.
Under-Sink Reverse Osmosis Systems
Reverse osmosis (RO) systems install beneath the kitchen sink and deliver filtered water through a dedicated faucet for drinking and cooking. RO membranes can remove a broad range of contaminants that carbon filtration alone won’t address, including chloramine, lead, arsenic, chromium-6, PFAS, nitrates, and fluoride. The tradeoff is coverage: a point-of-use system treats one location, while a whole-house system treats the entire supply. Point-of-use systems also tend to carry a lower upfront cost.
Filtration and water softening address different problems and work well together. Our water softener installation service handles mineral scale from hard water. If your concerns include both chloramine and mineral buildup, both systems can be installed without conflict. Filter media and RO membranes require periodic replacement to maintain performance, and our team can advise on replacement intervals based on your system type and San Diego’s water conditions.

What San Diego Homeowners Gain from a Professionally Installed Filtration System
The most immediate benefit most homeowners notice is a change in how their tap water tastes and smells. Chloramine is the main culprit behind the chemical taste common in San Diego tap water, and reducing it can make a noticeable difference at the kitchen faucet. That improvement can carry over to coffee, cooking, and anything else prepared with tap water.
Beyond taste, a reverse osmosis system can reduce a range of contaminants from drinking water, including lead, arsenic, chromium-6, PFAS, nitrates, and fluoride. Whole-house filtration can reduce sediment and chemical exposure across the entire water supply, which over time can help protect appliances from buildup and lower maintenance demands. Homeowners who eliminate bottled water also cut ongoing household costs and plastic waste.
