San Diego Water Quality & Why Filtration Matters

According to the City of San Diego Public Utilities Department, San Diego’s tap water ranges from 16 to 18 grains per gallon depending on your area, putting it firmly in the “very hard” category. Hardness isn’t the only issue, though. The city uses chloramine, a compound of chlorine and ammonia, as its primary disinfectant rather than free chlorine. Chloramine is more stable across a large distribution system, but it’s also harder to remove at the tap.

Standard activated carbon pitcher filters and basic faucet attachments are designed for free chlorine. They don’t effectively remove chloramine. Addressing it requires either catalytic carbon filtration or a reverse osmosis system, both of which are installed solutions rather than countertop workarounds. San Diego tap water meets current federal and California safety standards. The reason homeowners pursue filtration isn’t safety compliance. It’s the gap between what’s legally acceptable and what they want from their drinking and cooking water. Water Filtration System Types We Install

Whole-House Water Filtration

A whole-house system installs at the point where water enters the home, so every tap, shower, and appliance receives filtered water. Whole-house carbon filtration can reduce chloramine along with the taste and odor issues that come with it. It doesn’t remove dissolved minerals, which is a separate concern addressed by water softening rather than filtration.

Under-Sink Reverse Osmosis Systems

Reverse osmosis (RO) systems install beneath the kitchen sink and deliver filtered water through a dedicated faucet for drinking and cooking. RO membranes can remove a broad range of contaminants that carbon filtration alone won’t address, including chloramine, lead, arsenic, chromium-6, PFAS, nitrates, and fluoride. The tradeoff is coverage: a point-of-use system treats one location, while a whole-house system treats the entire supply. Point-of-use systems also tend to carry a lower upfront cost.
